Automation and Remote Device Management will be Key for Managing IoT Service Quality

Telecoms.com Annual Industry Survey also revealed that smart cities, utilities, and industrial markets highlighted as top IoT opportunities

Vancouver, Canada – December 4, 2019 – IoT offerings are developing beyond smart home technology with enterprise IoT vertical markets poised to provide significant opportunities, according to the new 2019 Telecoms.com Annual Industry Survey. Produced in partnership with Incognito Software who sponsored the IoT section of the survey, the 2019 report explores developing IoT market opportunities, the offering models which will prevail, and perceptions around device management functions. For communications service providers (CSPs) and IoT providers looking to overcome the operational challenges of managing millions of connected devices, the survey indicated that automation, remote device management, vendor neutrality, and the ability to offer business intelligence applications are top of mind to ensure IoT service quality, drive new business opportunities, and improve operational efficiency.

The survey was conducted in October 2019 and garnered over 400 responses globally from telecom professionals primarily working in management or engineering roles.

"The impact of IoT systems on manufacturing and smart cities will be significant through improved productivity, efficiency, and optimization. Capitalizing on this new opportunity will require service providers to understand where value can be created for their industrial and enterprise customers, and successfully rolling out new end-to-end business applications," said Wei Shi, Intelligence Content Manager at Telecoms.com.

"The enterprise IoT opportunity has the potential to be a game-changer for CSPs who can bundle connectivity with other value-added services for enterprise IoT customers," said Pete Koat, CTIO at Incognito Software. "Managing millions of IoT devices introduces operational complexity which can impact overall service quality. IoT providers require remote device management functions, such as automated device discovery and diagnostics, and rapid integration to feed device data to business analytics engines. Incognito’s Industrial IoT solution helps CSPs drive new business services by supporting the complete lifecycle management of IoT devices and applications while harnessing edge intelligence from IoT devices."

Key findings from the report include:

  • IoT is happening now – 46% of respondents stated they have already invested in IoT applications/services, while another 30% will invest in the next 12-24 months;
  • The greatest opportunities for IoT – Smart cities, utilities, and industrial/manufacturing are highlighted as the top three areas of opportunity for CSPs;
  • Automated device management will play a key role in ensuring service quality – Zero-touch provisioning, automated device discovery, and automated diagnostics and fault management scored the highest for device management functions seen as critical to driving service quality and operational efficiency;
  • IoT business models and offerings will continue to develop – the “connectivity only” model garnered a healthy 33% of responses, while IoT platforms for applications (54%) and purpose-built applications (55%) are considered to be the models that will dominate;
  • Enterprise services departments and CTO offices are driving IoT initiatives – While 27% identified the enterprise service department as leading the IoT strategy, the CTO office still has a strong influence cited by 18% of respondents.
